Questions to Ask Before Your Next Ecommerce Job

No two ecommerce career paths are identical, that much we can guarantee! We encounter ecom professionals with diverse career backgrounds. Some began in marketing or sales, while others have a strong retail background. A fortunate few have been working in ecom from the very start.

It's pretty clear to us that there's no exact blueprint for reaching your desired destination, and honestly, we’re all for it! So, what does this mean for you when it's time for a new role? If the path isn't crystal clear, how do you decide what's next?

Here’s three questions to ask yourself before you start looking for your new ecommerce job….

What's lacking in my current role?

Take a minute to think about what's missing from your current role. For some, it may be related to the scope of their role. Perhaps you're seeking a stronger mentor or growth opportunities. For others, it might be about remuneration or feeling undervalued. Or maybe, you're yearning for values or culture alignment. Whatever it is, having a clear understanding of what's missing from your current role will prevent you from making the mistake of jumping into a new role that doesn't offer much more than your old one.

Top tip: If it’s your thing….Create a 'dream job' vision board! This visual reminder can help clarify your goals and guide you toward the right opportunities.

How will I know when I’ve found the right thing?

Take some time to ponder the aspects of your current role that you genuinely adore. This could encompass anything from the culture and flexibility to the scope of your role and more. These are the things that you love and wouldn’t want to give up.

Top tip: make a list of your top 3 ‘non-negotiables’ and only apply for roles that have all three.

Where do I see myself in the future?

This is where things can get challenging! Ecommerce careers are constantly evolving, so the role you envision having in 10 years might not even exist yet. However, chances are you have an idea of the direction you’d like to go in. Consider where you want to be in the next 2, 5, and 10 years, as well as the skills you'll need to acquire to get there. That way you can target opportunities that will help you reach your full potential.

Top tip: If you're unsure, seek advice! Have a conversation with industry peers who are already living the dream; they'll offer valuable insights on what it takes to succeed in your desired role.

Once you've explored the possibilities of your limitless ecom career, it can help shape which opportunities will best serve you in the future. Having a clear vision of your destination will align you with the path you need to take.

And if you can answer all the questions above and are certain it's time for a new job, let us know what you're looking for so we can reach out if any opportunities arise.
