Cover letters…yes or no?

Hands up if you love writing cover letters!?….nobody?

No surprises there. Writing cover letters isn’t anyone’s favorite task, and the reality is that most of us don’t exactly love reading them either. But here’s the secret: sometimes, just sometimes, a great cover letter can be the game-changer between landing that dream job and getting lost in the sea of applications. 🌟

So when should you consider writing a cover letter? ✨

  • When the job you're applying for is all about writing or storytelling.

  • When your resume doesn’t quite tell the full story.

  • When you’re on the cusp of being a “yes” or a “no” for the role.

But let’s face it, most cover letters don’t get read by employers. Our super scientific (a.k.a. not-so-scientific) guess is that only 1 in 300 cover letters actually get the attention they deserve. 😅

If you’re convinced that your cover letter is a must to tell your story, here are some tips to make it sparkle:

Personalize It.
Make sure you know who you’re addressing. No generic “Dear Sir/Madam” greetings. And please, double-check the name—no one wants to see the wrong name in there!

Match the Brand’s Tone.
Show off the personality that your CV might not reveal. If you’re applying for a creative role or a brand you absolutely adore, let your enthusiasm shine through. Make your cover letter the jazz hands of your application! 🎉

Tell a Story.
Share a personal insight or a fun anecdote that connects you to the job. A generic template isn’t enough—make sure you’re addressing the specifics of the job ad and highlighting why you’re the perfect fit.

Attach It with Your CV.
Combine your cover letter and CV into one file so it can’t be missed. It’s a little trick to make sure your cover letter gets seen!

Our advice? Make it fabulous or don’t bother. ✨

At Revere, cover letters are optional. If the job asks for one and you’re not feeling up to it, it might be a sign that it’s not the right fit for you.
